Today my rant is about the definition of erotica in the book world. If you Google erotica here is an example of what you might find Erotic Literature, but this definition doesn't please me. When choosing categories for a novel to be listed under for example; Romance the field is way too broad. The same goes for erotica. Does a book having sex written in it mean it is erotic? My author friends say no. They say what defines erotica is if it makes the reader feel aroused. Don't laugh but apparently I write erotica and didn't even know it. For some reason, I thought to write erotic literature meant to write about bondage and such. I know, again don't laugh. But the problem lies in the fact that you can not clearly define the term in the book world, where there aren't any rules it seems. The definition of erotica is literature or art intended to arouse sexual desire. So why can't it be clearly defined? I will tell you. Because what may seem erotic to one may be vanilla to another. Therefore leaving the lines blurred. What do you think?
